Be Winter Ready
The winter can throw many challenges at us, and it’s important to be prepared for the hazards and dangers it can bring. Paying attention to weather warnings, and acting accordingly, can be lifesaving, and many potential disasters can be averted with a little forward planning.
Flooding, snow and frozen pipes can all wreak havoc in the winter, and there are many preventative measures that are simple and easy to put in place. Prevention is always better than having to deal with the damage afterwards, so consider the ways in which you can make your life easier, and talk to our experts at Macroom Tool Hire and Sales to find everything you need to winter proof your home.
Prepare for Winter
- Be prepared at home. There are many ways in which you can make the winter feel less arduous, and making sure your home is ready for a sudden storm or a snowed-in situation can help to put your mind at ease. Prepare yourself by ensuring you have plenty of dried or canned goods to create a few emergency meals if needed, and keep extra supplies of medication, fuel and lighting. Candles and torches are useful to have on hand, especially in the event of a power cut. A snow shovel is another handy item to keep at home!
- Prevent frozen pipes. Ensure that all of your pipes are properly insulated before the winter hits so that frozen pipes won’t cause an issue for you. You can wrap a towel around an outside tap or add insulating material, and keep your house warm as much as possible to avoid the pipes getting too cold. It can be a good idea to turn off your internal water supply at the stopcock if you are going to be away for more than a couple of nights.
- Look out for others in your community. The winter can be isolating for elderly or ill members of your community. Remember that some people do not have access to the Internet, and may not be prepared for sudden weather emergencies. Popping in to visit an elderly or infirm neighbour will enable you to ensure that they have sufficient supplies of food, fuel and medication, and that they are staying warm enough in the cold weather.
- Don’t forget your car. If you drive a car, you should ensure it’s ready for the winter, with the correct tyres, fluids and equipment. Carrying an emergency pack, with shovel, blanket, high visibility vest and torch can be very useful, and you should ensure that you have checked your oil, anti-freeze and tyres before long journeys.
