Spring is Here! Here’s Your Spring Gardening Checklist
It’s always around this time of year that we all start eagerly anticipating the warmer weather; and of course, the prospect of getting out in the garden again, and enjoying some much needed sunshine.
However, before you pull out the sun-lounger and dust down the BBQ, it’s a good idea to ensure that you’ve made a start on the gardening; in order to have your flowerbeds and lawns looking perfect for the summer season.
Here’s a helpful checklist to ensure you have your garden looking its best.
Spring Gardening Checklist
- Prepare your flower beds. If you want your garden to be a profusion of colour in summer, it’s time to ensure that your flower beds are primed and ready. If you’ve got any winter mulch, remove it; or if it’s already well composted, work over the top layer of soil. It’s always a good idea to work in some manure or leaf mould too.
- Get pruning. If you haven’t already pruned your fruit trees, now is the time to do it; otherwise, if you try to prune when the buds are beginning to form, you may cause the tree to produce a smaller crop.
- Start seeding. You’re probably no doubt aware that now is the time to start seeding plants indoors, in order to get them outside around May to June time. Place your seed pots in a sunny spot and remember to water, but don’t over-water.
- Plant the vegetables. Give your vegetable patch a good working over, and start planting your vegetables.
Maintaining Your Garden
If you’ve got decking, now is the perfect time to clean it off, check it for any damage, and treat the wood. If you’ve got a stone patio, check it for any damage and hire a pressure washer to clean off any moss.
Make sure you remember to check your garden furniture too. Of course, if it’s plastic, it’s unlikely to need anything more than a quick scrub-down. However, if you have wooden garden furniture, you may need to treat the wood, in order to prevent weather damage.
Starting a New Garden Project
If you’ve got big ideas for your garden, such as building a new shed, creating an arbour, or making a new decking area, spring is an excellent time to do it; as you’ll have it finished in time for the summer.
If cost is an issue, look into recycling materials where possible, and exploring the option of garden equipment hire, especially if you need specialist equipment such as a post hole borer.
Looking After Your Lawn
Of course, it’s really important to start caring for your lawn in the spring; which doesn’t necessarily just mean giving it a tidy-up with the lawn-mower! Hire a leaf blower to get rid of the covering of winter leaves, attend to any ‘bald spots’ you may have by planting fresh grass seed, and trim the edges to create a fresh, neat appearance.
