Up and Away! Convert Your Loft to Create More Space For Your Family
Let’s face it, we could all do with a bit more space in our homes, and with property prices so high, making the most of the place you have is a must. If you have a loft, it’s well worth exploring the options for conversion to create an extra room for your family, allowing you all to spread your wings a little more.
Versatile Loft Conversions
The sky’s the limit when you create an extra room in your house, so you’ll want to spend plenty of time just working out how your family could best use the space.
You could gain an extra bedroom, maybe even with an ensuite bathroom if your loft is wide enough, or a hobby or games room area. If you work from home, a home office might be just what you need to prevent your work from taking over the lounge, or the large, light space might be ideal as a therapy room or studio.
You could even create a second family bathroom or kitchen area – or for a really large loft, how about a bedsit with kitchen and bathroom facilities? Perfect for a relative to live independently or to rent out for a second income!
How to Plan Your Loft Conversion
It’s an exciting time when you’re making changes to your home, and there are lots of things to think about. Give yourself a headstart by thinking through these key areas as you envisage your space.
1. Size and shape. Your plans will, to some extent, be dependent upon the pitch of your room and the height of your space. You’ll have various options for windows, including standard velux windows, or you may need to create a dormer, where the structure of the roof is changed to create a larger space, to accommodate your new room.
2. Flooring. Think about how your space will be used and what sort of flooring will best suit your new room. If you have wooden or laminate floor, you’ll find that it will be noisier on the floors below so you may want to consider other options.
3. Lighting. If you have a number of velux windows, the chances are that your room will be a beautifully light space. If you’re using it as a bedroom, however, this will mean that you’ll need to pay attention to blocking out the light to prevent sleep disruption! Fitted blinds are usually the best option, as they will not restrict opening and closing of windows as necessary. You may want to look into wall lighting, or use desk and floor lamps to create extra light where it’s needed.
