Backyard Games: Our Favourite DIY Garden Projects
The sun is shining and there’s no better time to flex your DIY muscles and surprise the kids with an exciting new project in the garden. There are thousands of fantastic project ideas online so you can be sure you’ll find the perfect thing to match your space, your tastes and your DIY skills!
Getting your teeth stuck into a project will give you a great sense of satisfaction each time you see the finished article and you’ll find that it’ll be a brilliant learning experience for older children and teenagers too if they can be roped in to help with the work. It’s a good way to entice them into the fresh air and away from the lure of the screen, and they’ll soon start coming up with ideas for future projects, too.
Our Top DIY Picks for the Garden
1. A mound slide. We love this great looking slide, using a regular plastic slide but building it onto a hill in your garden instead of attaching it to metal steps. It’s infinitely more fun – no pushing each other on the steps, it’ll blend into the greenery and you can make it as long as you like!
2. Tyre swings. Grab some old tyes (usually available for free from a local garage) and some lengths of strong chain and you’re all set! You can paint the tyres for unique, funky swings and you can attach them to a tree, or build a wooden frame if you prefer. You’ll need to make sure they’re safe to swing on, so be sure to check out the correct fixings and test the weight carefully to avoid accidents.
3. Chalkboard wall. This has got to be the easiest idea of the lot. Going back to basics with a wall painted in chalkboard paint, or a large, upcycled board. A jar of chalks will see the children entertained for hours – just look out for the rain!
4. Mud kitchen. Whether you build this yourself out of stacked pallets or upcycle old cupboards and shelves, this is a favourite all year round. A stack of old pots and pans, some mud and a few leaves to stir in – the possibilities are endless and this will inspire your younger children to get back to nature and spend some quality time outdoors.
5. Pallet furniture. As good for the grown-ups as it is for the kids, pallet furniture is this year’s hottest craze. Make sure you source pallets that are heat treated, rather than treated with toxic chemicals, and then just choose your favourite idea. We love the garden seating areas, made from stacked pallets and outdoor cushions. Simple, great looking and fun!
