Be Prepared! How To Avoid Being Caught Out By Unpredictable Weather
Like it or loathe it, we live in a part of the World that is often subject to unexpected or difficult weather conditions. Sudden changes in the weather, or long periods of heavy rain or snow can cause problems for you and for your property, and a bit of time spent preparing for adverse weather conditions can be well worthwhile.
If you’ve been affected by difficult weather conditions in the past, you’ll know that the consequences of flooding, broken pipes or storm damage can be devastating. There are many simple measures that can help to keep you and your home safe, and it’s a good idea to start thinking about this while the days are still long and dry enough to put preparations in place.
How to Prepare For Adverse Weather
1. Ensure your home is in good condition. Deal with any existing leaks or damage and ensure you have no loose roof tiles or fencing. Check whether there are small cracks or chips in your windows, which would be easy to fix at this stage but could cause a big problem if they were to suddenly shatter in high winds or sudden frosts.
2. Take preventative measures. Insulate all pipes and your loft, and during cold spells, leave your heating on low to avoid pipes freezing suddenly. Put salt down on paths or pavements near your home to prevent slips and falls.
3. Be prepared. Stock up on basic provisions as well as emergency items such as sand or hydro bags, dehumidifiers and water pumps. This is especially important if you are at risk of flooding, in which case you will also need to move valuable items from the floor onto higher storage units or shelves.
4. Don’t forget your car. Check that your car windscreen is intact and repair any chips promptly. Carry anti-freeze and de-icer with you in your car, and it’s also a good idea to carry an emergency bag in the boot in case you’re caught out in difficult weather conditions while travelling. Packing a blanket, a bottle of water, emergency snacks and a torch will only take moments but will give you peace of mind throughout the winter.
